UEA Sportspark welcomed around 150 students from all 9 Inspiration Trust secondary academies for this year’s badminton tournament on Thursday 21st May - and it was a busy one!

Students from Years 7–10 took part in doubles matches, where teamwork really made the difference. The day followed a round-robin format, meaning each pair faced off against all eight other schools. By the end of the tournament, an impressive 288 matches had been played, keeping the courts buzzing from start to finish.

Right from the first serve, teams showed great chemistry and produced some brilliant rallies. Matches were played up to 11 points, with a points system that kept things competitive across the board—teams could earn 3 points for a win, 2 for a tiebreak loss, and 1 point for scoring 5 or more in a loss. It meant every match counted, no matter who you were up against. Several competitions went right down to the wire, with every point making a difference.

The standard of play was matched by the attitude on court. Students gave it their all but also showed fantastic sportsmanship throughout. It was great to see players quick to recognise good shots and long rallies, whether they’d won the point or not. During rest games, pupils were supporting with scoring as well as cheering on their teammates. All schools should be really proud of the effort, teamwork, and respect on display—it’s a real credit to the PE staff across the trust.

Paul Wayman, Inspiration Trust Schools Sports Coordinator

“What a brilliant day of badminton! The energy, sportsmanship and determination on display were outstanding, and it was amazing to see students supporting each other and enjoying the competition from start to finish. This tournament is all about more than just results—it’s about teamwork, resilience, and bringing students together through sport. Every player should be really proud of what they achieved today”

A big part of the day’s success came from the student leaders from Sir Isaac Newton and Hewett Academy. They helped keep everything running smoothly by organising fixtures, officiating matches, and keeping track of scores. Huge thanks go to all of them for their efforts.
