On Friday 4th July, six of our Primary Schools attended the final primary sport event of the year, athletics at Wellesley Recreation Ground in Great Yarmouth. The sun was shining for this year’s edition of the event, providing the perfect atmosphere for an amazing day of jumping, throwing and sprinting for athletes in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6.

The morning began with schools arriving at the venue and having their team photos taken, which will be printed, framed and sent to each school to display. After their warmups, led by our student leaders, and briefing, the action began! Year groups competed on a rotation of Javelin (Nerf) throw, standing long jump and 4x100m relay, meaning there was an event for every athlete to excel at. Schools earned points based on participation and finishing positions, meaning even if an athlete was not competing in their favourite event, they were still earning valuable points for their team. The competition was so close that every point was valuable!

After breaking for lunch, it was time for the individual sprints. Year 4 and 5 students sprinted 60m, and Year 5 and 6 students sprinted 80m. The races were fast and competitive, with multiple events coming down to a photo finish at the line! Over 200 young athletes attended the event, and every athlete took home a certificate for participating.

Paul Wayman, Whole Trust Sports Coordinator said:

“What a way to end the Primary sports events for the year. Every athlete did their school proud today, perfectly demonstrating the Olympic & Paralympic values we promote. Students pushed themselves to do their best in everything they attempted, and with the final scores being so close, any athlete that competed today earned their school precious points. Thank you to all of our Primary School staff for helping make this event such an enjoyable one to be a part of.”

Student leaders from Sir Isaac Newton Sixth Form were vital to the running of the event. They took on the roles of running the throwing and jumping events, recording measurements, awarding points and presenting medals and trophies to winners. This event would not have been possible without them!

The final scores were incredibly close, with the gap between first and second place being a single point! But it was Charles Darwin Primary who prevailed with 161 points, and Norwich Primary Academy, who came second with 160 points.
