On Wednesday 31st January, students from across the Inspiration Trust’s nine secondary schools came together at the Teaching School Hub’s South Hall to compete in the annual Inspiration Trust Olympiad Geography Quiz.

The event was organised and hosted by Inspiration Trust's Subject Specialist Lead for Geography, Chris Moon and challenged students to answer a series of geography-related questions with different rounds including questions on human geography, populations, geological features, and sustainable resource use. The competition was split into several rounds, including a game of GeoGuessr in which players are tasked to guess locations from Google Street View imagery. Students were given a well-deserved break halfway through the event to re-energise and speak to their fellow students from different schools, including snacks.

All students showcased the breadth of their knowledge on geographical issues and themes, and the event gave students the opportunity to think deeply about current issues and different strands of Geography. The competition was fierce, and the atmosphere was electric. Hewett Academy’s team gave a particularly outstanding performance but was overtaken at the last moment by the excellent efforts of the Jane Austen College team, who took first place.

A student at East Point Academy said:

A student at Hewett Academy said:

“Today was a great day because we had fun. We got to use our brains and it opened us up to new things."

A student at KES Academy said:

"[The event was] very good, questions were enticing and fun. I especially liked the GeoGuessr questions"

Inspiration Trust's Subject Associate for Geography, Chris Moon said:

"It was a pleasure to host our inaugural Inspiration Trust Olympiad Geography Quiz Competition. After the success of the Essay Competition last year, our Inspiration Trust students once again showed their amazing geographical knowledge and passion for the subject. Students pitted their geographical wit against each other in rounds which tested their locational knowledge, awareness of eminent geographical issues in the news and understanding of the state of the world.

We had fun in creative rounds using satellite images, Streetview and getting teachers involved. A great time was had by all. Congratulations to Jane Austen College who were crowned champions, only just surpassing Hewett Academy."
