NCETM Accredited Professional Development Lead Programmes

Overview

This programme is designed to offer development and support to teachers interested in leading the professional development of other teachers. The year-long programme involves three workshop days, academic reading, designing, planning, running and evaluating a PD programme for other teachers, and reflecting on the whole process of developing as a PD Lead.

Participants will undertake to plan, run and evaluate a professional development programme for a group of teachers/ practitioners during the course of the programme. They will record their planning, evaluation and reflection.

Successful completion of the programme and its associated paperwork results in NCETM Professional Development Lead accreditation. There is an option to gain 60 Masters Level credits for completing this programme with further, focussed, academic study.

Who is this for?

This programme is for teachers and leaders who have the potential to develop their skills and capacity to lead, facilitate and support the mathematical professional development of others both within and across schools. SLEs can participate in this programme and may also like to consider NCP19-06, the Maths SLE School Improvement Support Programme.

Teachers with some experience of leading the professional development of other teachers, either in their own school/college, or more widely, can take part. Participants will be expected to commit to the full programme of activities and will need the support of their organisation to support and enable full participation.

What is involved?

  • Three days of workshops with other teachers on the programme
  • Independent study and school-based work
  • Online discussion as part of a professional community
  • The design, planning, running and evaluation of a PD programme for other teachers
  • Completion of a ‘Programme Planning and Evaluation Template’ (PET), a ‘Session PET’ and a ‘Reflection and Learning Journal’ to demonstrate high quality planning, evaluation and reflection.

Intended outcomes

  • To consider what constitutes effective CPD and the role of the PD Lead in this
  • To be aware of some fundamental themes and issues in maths and the teaching of maths (including those related to the National Curriculum, relevant examination board syllabuses and teaching for mastery) and to consider the implications of these in the context of supporting other teachers
  • To develop an understanding of effective models of maths professional development, the rationale for using them and the evidence that supports them.

The wider context

The NCETM and the Maths Hubs Network aim to promote high quality, collaborative professional development for all teachers. This programme aims to build capacity, ensuring that there are enough people with the skills to lead, facilitate and support the professional development of others, both within and across schools.

The programme is part of a strategy to support the development of PD Leads across the national network. Once accredited, PD Leads will form an essential part of the hubs’ leadership community.

Expectations of participants and their schools

This programme is for teachers and leaders who have the potential to develop their skills and capacity to lead, facilitate and support the mathematical professional development of others, both within and across schools.

Applicants should have some previous experience in leading the professional development of other teachers, either in their own organisation, or more widely. Applicants must be able and willing to commit to participate fully in all elements of the programme.

The participant’s school must have the capacity and commitment to support them throughout the programme, and in working with teachers from other schools following successful completion of the programme.

Funding

The local Maths Hub will sponsor applicants with a payment of £800 for four days of release time.

Which cohort will I join?

Having been successful in your application to join the NCETM Accredited PD Lead Programme, you will be allocated to a cohort according to the phase that you have requested. The cohorts will include participants from different Maths Hubs, according to location and expertise.
