Health and wellbeing policy

Sir Isaac Newton Sixth Form aims to create a healthy and safe environment for its students and staff. We are committed to:
- Promoting healthy lifestyle choices.
- Providing a range of services which improve the physical, emotional and sexual health and wellbeing of our students and staff.
- Empowering individuals to develop the knowledge and understanding to make informed choices about their health, wellbeing and safety, and reducing risk-taking behaviour.
- Engaging the whole sixth form community in developing and implementing a health and wellbeing strategy.
- Creating a culture where staff, students and parents can talk openly about mental health and where staff can offer swift access to support where needed.
A healthy sixth form recognises the importance of investing in the health and welfare of its students and staff by providing a physical and social environment which is conducive to teaching, learning, and living and working.
The purpose of the health and wellbeing strategy is to provide a framework within which to:
- Ensure staff and students understand the sixth form’s commitment to health and wellbeing.
- Embed a concern for health and wellbeing throughout the organisation.
- Celebrate our achievements in relation to health and wellbeing.
- Collect and report on appropriate data relating to staff and student wellbeing and identify actions required to further promote health and wellbeing.
- Promote healthy living and raise awareness of the consequences of an unhealthy lifestyle.
- Through partnership working, further develop the range of available services, facilities and activities, increase take-up and reduce health inequalities.
Delivery of strategic objectives
- Ensure staff and students understand the sixth form’s commitment to health and wellbeing:
- Induction for all students.
- Health and wellbeing feature of tutorial programme.
- Health and wellbeing key element of student surveys and focus groups.
- The vitae days cover a broad range of awareness activities.
- Student welfare support is publicised throughout the sixth form.
- Opportunities for physical activities are promoted throughout the sixth form.
- Staff are routinely made aware of the sixth form provision and services dedicated to health and wellbeing e.g. counselling services.
- Training and development programme includes health and wellbeing.
- Staff wellbeing is a key element of staff surveys.
- Embed a concern for health and wellbeing throughout the organisation:
- The sixth form tutorial programme includes specific sessions on health and wellbeing such as sexual health, healthy eating, physical activity, mental health, etc.
- The sixth form provides access to sports facilities through electives which students can join.
- A comprehensive enrichment programme includes a range of activities designed to encourage participation in extra-curricular activities such as debating elective, cooking elective, sports electives and robotics, etc.
- Extensive experience and associated protocols for working with a range of external agencies to enable us support students who are deemed to be at risk or vulnerable.
- Mentoring and counselling provision is available to students in need of specific support.
- Behaviour for learning policy promotes anti-bullying practice with timely and appropriate action.
- Student health needs assessment processes and information provide a strong framework of support including individual support plans.
- A sexual health clinic operates on a termly basis staffed by appropriately external agencies.
- There is a team of first-aiders who are trained and able to deliver appropriate support.
- Risk assessment protocols and procedures are well developed e.g. declared medical condition, disability or pregnancy, return to work after long-term absences to ensure any necessary adjustments are made.
- Where there are issues of concern or ill health, risk assessments and health assessments are undertaken to ensure staff are physically able to carry out their duties and to ensure any necessary adjustments can be made.
- Training and development includes health and wellbeing.
- Staff participate in a number of wellbeing events through the year.
- An absence management procedure in place which includes ‘return to work’ discussions related to health and wellbeing following short term absences and benchmarking of absence data.
- Non-judgemental and proactive support provided to individual staff experiencing mental health issues is managed through HR.
- Celebrate our achievements in relation to health and wellbeing:
- Achievements such as fundraising are displayed across the sixth form.
- Commendation and awards achieved by the sixth form communicated to the students and staff and displayed across the sixth form.
- Collect and report on appropriate data relating to staff and student wellbeing and identify actions required to further promote health and wellbeing:
- Student attendance records including authorised/unauthorised and signing out by students.
- Delivery and take-up of services and activities including counselling, enrichment and mentoring are reported through the self-assessment process.
- Student feedback through the student council, surveys and focus groups.
- Health and safety incidences are reported to the weekly meetings of the leadership team.
- The sixth form sends a staff member to the Trust health and safety working group, who then feeds back on discussions and initiates improvements in health and safety for students and staff.

- Through partnership working, further develop the range of available services, facilities and activities, increase take-up and reduce health inequalities:
- Well-developed partnership working with external agencies supports needs analysis and development of new provision and services e.g. external agency delivery of assemblies on e-safety, sexual health, drugs and alcohol.
- Whole school training and development on health and wellbeing is a regular item on meeting agendas and INSET training.
