Entry requirements

GCSE requirement

You will need to demonstrate:

  • A standard equivalent to a GCSE grade C / grade 4 in mathematics and English to teach at secondary level;
  • A standard equivalent to a GCSE grade C / grade 4 in mathematics, English, and a science subject to teach at primary level.

Degree requirement

All trainee teachers need to have completed a degree in order to obtain qualified teacher status. We require applicants to have achieved a degree at 2:1 or above.

For secondary applicants this should be in, or closely related to, your proposed teaching subject. As a guideline we would normally expect that at least 50% of your degree is relevant to the National Curriculum subject you intend to teach. For primary applicants, the degree does not need to be subject specific.

If you are interested in applying but your degree does not meet our minimum entry requirements, please contact us so we can discuss your individual circumstances further.

Professional Skills Test

You have to pass the professional skills tests in numeracy and literacy before you begin your teacher training, so it’s important that you get them booked in as soon as possible. There is no limit to the number of times you can take the test, but only your first three attempts are free of charge. If you do not pass within these three attempts you will have to pay for any subsequent tests, so make sure you give yourself enough time to revise.

All tests are booked through Learndirect who have test centres across the country.

International qualifications

If you achieved your qualifications outside of the UK, please visit the National Academic Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) website  to find out whether your qualification is equivalent to UK GCSEs and degrees. You will need to evidence this by providing a NARIC Statement of Comparability with your application.
