Course outline

This BTEC Level 3 qualification is ideal for students who have a passion for science but either wish a more general content than the individual science A Levels or who wish to enhance their GCSE knowledge by undertaking an extra science qualification before progressing to full A Level courses. The qualification supports progression to higher education when taken as part of a programme of study that includes other vocational or general qualifications. The scope of units available is broad although each qualification has a proportion of mandatory content.

Course content

This qualification provides an opportunity for a National Certificate (equivalent to 0.5 A Level). This course is undertaken in one year and is comprised of two units, 50% of which is externally examined. Topics covered are Principles and Applications of Science I (examined) and Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques (coursework).

Students then have the opportunity to progress onto an Extended Certificate (A level equivalent). This is comprised of four units, three of which are mandatory. Two externally examined units comprise 58% of the overall qualification, the rest of which is coursework.
