All hands on deck for Navy catering challenge

Catering students at Thetford Academy sailed through a creative cookery challenge as they got a flavour of life as a Royal Navy chef.
Kim and Kate from the Navy catering corps visited the school on Wednesday, June 5 to talk about what it takes to keep a ship’s crew well fed, demonstrating a chicken roulade that could be made onboard and served in the officers’ mess.
The Year 10 students whipped up their own two-course meal from a store of ingredients in a ‘Ready, Steady, Cook’-style team challenge.
Tasty treats on their menus included tomato and basil bruschetta, chicken and pancetta carbonara, white chocolate cheesecake, and strawberry meringue kisses.
Food teacher Gill Taylor said: “Students confidently rose to the challenge, communicating and co-operating well in their teams to produce some very creative, appetising dishes.”
