Roman army’s latest recruits explore ancient history

Children from Norwich Primary Academy stepped back in time 2,000 years to find out what Britain was like under Roman rule.
The Year 4 pupils visited Norwich Castle Museum on January 30 to explore life in the first century AD, when Boudica led the Iceni people in an unsuccessful uprising against the Roman occupation of what is now East Anglia.
Roman and Iceni characters gave their perspective on both sides of the conflict, and a Roman ‘soldier’ demonstrated battle techniques used by the invaders – which pupils put to good use in a mock battle with shields and armour.
The pupils explored the museum’s collection of Roman artefacts up close and made their own torc, a piece of Iceni jewellery.
