Sign up for sixth form taster day at top sporting venue

Published on 19/12/17

Students from across Norfolk are being offered free places on a visit to one of the country's top centres of sporting excellence.

The English Institute Of Sport in Sheffield is the country’s largest multi-sports training centre, used by professional sport stars and Olympic athletes.

The free trip, on Tuesday January 9, 2018, will include a tour of the Institute’s facilities and two practical sessions: a boxing session with the venue’s top-level coaches; and a sport science fitness testing session, to see how top athletes are monitored and tested during training.

The event is being organised by The Hewett Academy in Norwich, but is open to all students looking to study at sixth form in September regardless of their current school.

Principal Rebecca Handley-Kirk said: “We are looking forward to a fantastic day out that will give students a great taste of the range of our two-year BTEC Sport course.

"It is just one of the courses in our new BTEC Plus programme, which offers students an alternative to the traditional three A Levels.”

The programme focuses on extended, single-subject qualifications that are equivalent to three A Levels, but allow students to concentrate in depth on a single subject. Students can also choose to ‘top up’ their course with an optional matched A Level.

The courses make great use of The Hewett Academy’s unique teaching and sporting facilities in the centre of Norwich, with subjects including art and design, business, health and social care, and performing arts on offer alongside sport.

Places on the taster day can be booked by emailing and are offered on a first come, first served basis.
