Two young poets from The Hewett Academy have been crowned champions at a performance poetry contest.

Grace Stewart, who’s in Year 11, and Year 10 student Alfie McEvoy brought home the winners’ trophy in the Fly Festival Poetry Slam contest on July 12, part of the University of East Anglia’s Festival of Literature for Young People.

Their confident and engaging recital also won them £20 Waterstones vouchers in the contest against students from schools across the city, introduced by rap artist BREIS.

Grace and Alfie were inspired to write their poems following a series of workshops at the Hewett with performance poet Rosy Carrick, who gave them tips on how to perform confidently in front of an audience.

Principal Rebecca Handley-Kirk said: “What a fantastic achievement to end our school year with.

“Grace and Alfie gave a brilliant performance and thoroughly deserved to take first prize - congratulations to them both.”
