Maths SLE School Improvement Support Programme
This project aims to support mathematics Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs) in developing their approaches to maths school improvement work including drawing on the expertise of, and aligning more with approaches used in, the Maths Hubs Programme. It will provide a regional support programme for participants through three workshops and an online community. The workshops will run in the North, the Midlands and the South.
The SLE programme is part of a strategy to support the development of local leaders of maths education (LLME) across the Maths Hubs Network. It is specifically designed to enable SLEs in their role to develop leadership capacity and capability in the schools they support.
Who is this for?
The programme is for current maths SLEs linked to a Teaching School, and will benefit those who have previous experience of developing leadership capacity in schools or who are new to the role. Participants may work in any phase, but their SLE specialism must be in maths. Participants will be expected to commit to the full programme of activities and will need the support of the headteacher of their own school and their Teaching School.
What is involved?
The programme will have the following elements:
- Three one-day regional workshops with a cohort of mathematics SLEs, which will explore both school improvement implementation processes (such as the Work Group model) and pedagogical interventions (such as teaching for mastery);
- An online community coordinated by Cohort Leads;
- SLEs carrying out and evaluating their own maths school improvement initiative.
Participants will develop their professional learning, acquiring:
- Skills in driving improvement in maths, including developing the capacity of school leadership of maths;
- Knowledge and understanding of the challenges and barriers to school improvement in maths and how to tackle them;
- Knowledge and understanding of effective teaching of maths including teaching for mastery.
Participants will develop their practice, and will:
- Incorporate new processes and models into their SLE practice;
- Effectively evaluate and review the effectiveness of particular maths school improvement models.
The wider context
The NCETM and the Maths Hubs Network aim to promote high quality, collaborative professional development for all teachers. This programme aims to build capacity, ensuring that there are enough people with the skills to lead, facilitate and support the professional development of others, both within and across schools.
The programme is designed to provide a quality assured and tested professional development programme with associated materials, and to generate a collective evaluation to inform future project years or other projects.
Expectations of participants and their schools
The programme is for current maths SLEs linked to a Teaching School and will benefit those who have previous experience of developing leadership capacity in schools or who are new to the role. Participants must be able and willing to commit to participate fully in all elements of the programme.
The participant’s school must have the capacity and commitment to support them throughout the programme, and in working with teachers from other schools in their SLE role following successful completion of the programme.
The SLE development programme is funded by the Maths Hubs Programme. Funding covers provision of the three face-to-face days. Travelling expenses are not funded.
Successful SLEs will be sponsored by their local Maths Hub to cover supply costs for four days (the three face-to-face days and one day for gap task completion) at £200 per day.
Who is leading the Work Group?
The three cohorts will be led by the NCETM Regional Leads, Maths Hub Leads and experienced SLEs.
