Barry Smith: Rethinking MFL –  easy approaches that really work

Saturday, July 1, 2017 • 10am to 1pm • Norwich

Barry Smith of Michaela School offers a whistle stop tour of his unique take on MFL teaching. Bursting with common sense ideas that are quick and easy to apply, Barry offers low prep, high return strategies that will shock, delight and reassure in equal measure. Putting a sledgehammer to received wisdom, Barry brings a refreshingly no-nonsense take on what language teaching could be.

Tackling grammar, phonics, translation and creativity with aplomb, Barry jettisons ‘good practice’. Barry started teaching French and German in 1997 and spent a decade travelling the length and breadth of Britain as an independent educational trainer, before helping set up Michaela School in 2014. He has taught thousands of language teachers and received huge praise from the likes of Tom Bennett, Doug Lemov and Tom Sherrington. Most importantly, students love what he does because they feel massively accomplished extremely quickly.

And don’t worry! You don’t need to be Super Teacher to make these ideas work. No more searching for the fun factor. Start with the written word, never be ashamed of using English, pre-empt the high frequency errors, focus on learning return on time invested and never on fun for fun’s sake.

Come with an open mind, a willingness to throw off the shackles of conventional notions of ‘good practice’ and a desire to unashamedly take centre stage and really teach the language you love.

Attendees will take away high impact, easy-to-use strategies that work across the attainment range so that students can communicate with confidence, enthusiasm and secure knowledge of language.

Who should attend?

MFL teachers, MFL curriculum leaders and MFL line managers

The tutor

Barry Smith, founding deputy head at Michaela, master-minded these ground-breaking strategies: creating them from scratch, honing them over a twenty-year career and then going on to train the Michaela language team in the process.

Barry developed his ‘literacy first’ approach to language teaching in ‘some of the toughest schools in Wales’ before spending ten years training teachers. Barry Smith’s approach to language teaching has been described as ‘inspirational’, ‘a breath of fresh air’ and ‘brimming with brio’.

Barry Smith is one of the best teachers of MFL I’ve ever seen. His kids love him. They have a command of French that is stunning; I’ve never seen anything like it in my career- they spoke with better vocabulary, accent and confidence than most undergraduates I’ve heard - Tom Bennett, chair of the DfE Behaviour Management Group and founder of researchED
