Students sail to success in boatbuilding contest

A team of Great Yarmouth students has won an award at a school boat-building competition.

Trafalgar College students Finn Alderman, Sharon Vieira, Conner Impey, Scott Carson, and Chantal Hollyer received the ‘Honourable Mention’ award for the best effort at the Inter School Boat Challenge, held at Lowestoft College on Tuesday, March 28.

Teams from seven schools in the region were tasked with designing and building a prototype self-propelled, eco-friendly boat suitable for use in shallow waters such as the Norfolk Broads.

The students produced marketing posters and delivered a presentation about their design before the prototypes were tested in the training pool at Water Lane Sports Centre.

The designs were judged by industry experts from organisations including Brooms Boats, the International Boatbuilding and Training College, the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board, the East of England Energy Group, rowing charity Oarsome Chance, and Lowestoft College.

Trafalgar College assistant principal Marcus Wright said: “Team ‘HMS Trafalgar’ put a huge amount of work into the project, using a wide range of science, technology, engineering, and maths skills.

“Our Year 7 students were among the youngest there – some schools had teams who were at least two years older – so to come away with an award is very impressive.”
