New food tech room is a recipe for success

Students at Hethersett Academy will soon be cooking up a storm in a new, state-of-the-art food and nutrition room, thanks to a grant from the Wolfson Foundation.
The room will bring food technology at the academy into the 21st century, with equipment including a sous vide machine, dehydrators, and molecular gastronomy kits helping students to bring out their inner Heston Blumenthal.
Students will be able to take part in seminar-style learning and use a visualiser and smart board to record their work, creating a knowledge bank that can be stored for later use in lessons or private study.
The new facilities will be built using a generous investment of £35,000 from the Wolfson Foundation, a charity that awards grants to support excellence in education.
The grant was awarded following a rigorous review process during which the academy submitted plans sharing its vision for the new facilities. A representative from the Foundation visited the academy, and enjoyed a lunch prepared by the Year 10 students.
At the end of June the academy found out that its application had been successful, and the new room will open its doors in the autumn.
Hethersett’s head of technology Kate Finlay said: “I can’t wait to see the students’ faces in September! We’re all looking forward to the completion of the project, and having a food and nutrition room that will nurture talent and inspire our students to be the very best they can be.”
