Top author gets budding authors off to the write start

Published on 25/01/19

A bestselling author has given a masterclass in creative writing to Hewett Academy students at the launch of a region-wide short story competition.

Alex Scarrow, author of the popular TimeRiders science fiction series for young adults, visited the school on Tuesday, January 15 to meet Year 9 students and launch the Undercover Readers short story challenge.

He shared his top writing tips with students and helped them make a start on their story ideas, including a strange disease that turns everyone into pickles!

The competition is part of the Take Your Place programme run by the Network for East Anglian Collaborative Outreach (NEACO), which aims to raise aspirations and increase the number of young people in the region progressing to higher education.

Ten finalists from the Hewett will be invited to a celebration event in the summer, run in conjunction with the University of East Anglia’s FLY (Festival of Literature for Young people), where the overall competition winners will be announced.
