Sports hall shapes up

Published on 12/07/18

A new sports hall to be used by schools across Norwich has completed construction and is now ready to be kitted out.

The £2m centre on Hall Road will be used primarily by students from Jane Austen College and The Hewett Academy, but will also be available for other local schools to take advantage of.

Planning permission for the building was granted in October, with builders from construction firm Kier moving on site at the end of last year.

The company used pre-cut timbers prepared in Austria to minimise disruption on site and put up the building more quickly, handing over the keys this month with students from both schools visiting the site shortly before completion.

The hall will now be kitted out with new equipment to support a range of sports including netball, cricket, badminton, volleyball, trampolining, and basketball ready for use by students when they return after the summer break.

Jane Austen College head of school David Thomas said: "This is a great new facility for both our students and those from the Hewett Academy, and a great example of how our schools work together across the Inspiration Trust.

Hewett Academy principal Rebecca Handley Kirk said: "The Hewett Academy already has some of the best sports facilities in the city and we regularly welcome pupils from nearby schools for swimming, hockey, and football. This brilliant new centre is a great way to continue that tradition."
