School councillors meet the mayor for VIP debate

Children from Great Yarmouth Primary Academy have impressed the mayor with their public speaking skills in a VIP visit to the Town Hall.

Twenty-eight members of the school council, from Reception to Year 6, were invited for a special visit to find out how local democracy works on Thursday, July 12.

After a behind-the-scenes tour of the historic building with former mayor Mr Coleman, they were joined by the current mayor, Mrs Coleman, as they debated the motion: ‘School uniform: is it a good thing?’

Mrs Coleman said: “I was very impressed with the children’s behaviour and politeness.”

Sue Chater, link teacher for the school council, said: “I was very proud of the children as they conducted a public debate for the first time – they were a credit to our school.

“They really enjoyed it and some said that it was their best day ever!”
