Language leaders say ‘Oui!’ to success

Published on 22/06/17

Students at Jane Austen College have boosted their language and leadership skills by learning how to deliver foreign language lessons to primary schoolchildren.

The group of 12 students completed Routes Into Languages' Language Leader Award course, culminating in teaching French, Spanish, Arabic, and German lessons to pupils at Jane Austen’s sister school, Charles Darwin Primary.

During the course, run through Jane Austen College's extra-curricular electives programme, students spent 30 hours planning and preparing lessons, giving feedback to each other, and developing their own practice, before stepping into the classroom at Charles Darwin to lead a series of lessons in their chosen language.

The language leaders were awarded a certificate and pin badge for successfully completing the course.

Sophie Dare, one of the leaders, said: “I really enjoyed the language leader elective and as I want to work with children in the future, it has been a really good experience.”

Languages teacher Jamie Turner added: “We are very proud of the effort and commitment our students put into the course to make it a success.

“I hope the success of this year’s language leaders will inspire even more students to take up this elective next year.”
